A new Bloomberg Intelligence analysis, reported by the LA Times, found that the average home insurance premium now exceeds the average property tax bill in two-thirds of U.S. counties. Rates have climbed about 45% over the past decade after adjusting for inflation, driven in part by extreme weather. In the West, where property taxes are already higher, insurance makes up a smaller share of the total, but it’s still a growing part of what it costs to own a home, and rising deductibles mean homeowners are covering more before their insurer steps in.
If you’re buying, get an insurance quote early so it’s part of your budget from day one, and if you already own, a yearly coverage review is a smart habit. Thinking about a move and wondering what the full cost of ownership looks like? Reach out anytime, and I’m happy to walk you through it.
